Marjan Verstappen’s practice encompasses drawing and sculpture. Through these disciplines she explores concepts of mystery, truth, and how narratives about a place can be woven through objects and drawings. Through research, and a passion for drawing mundane things, she shows us the beauty, and absurdity, in specificity.
Recent exhibitions include Gallery Galleria (Galleria Shopping Centre, Toronto), curated by Aisle 4, The Fung Wah Biennial (Flux Factory, NYC), curated by Sally Szwed, Will Owen and Mattias Borello, and Art of the Danforth festival (Toronto), curated by Asad Raza. Her drawings are featured in Art Works! A CBC series about emerging artists in Canada.
Verstappen grew up in New Zealand, where she received her BFA in Sculpture from Dunedin School of Art. She moved to Canada in 2012 and graduated from OCAD University with an MFA in 2014. She is based in Toronto where she is co-director of Younger Than Beyoncé (YTB) Gallery.
